The art of tongue analysis has its root in the science of Ayurveda and is used in many ancient health traditions, such as traditional Chinese medicine.
In Ayurveda we use the tongue as a tool for analysis and diagnosis, by observing the shape, shadings, markings, wetness, texture and even the angle the tongue protrudes we can understand the current state of the doshas within our body.
Similar to reflexology, all the organs including limbs can be located on specific regions of the tongue. As a mirror of the body’s digestive system, the tongue can reflect malabsorption, state of the thoughts, condition of the blood and can also reveal the health of other various organs in the body.
For example if the tongue is covered by a thick coating, it may indicate the presence of toxins in the stomach, small intestine or large intestine.
If the root or back of the tongue is coated, it will indicate that toxins are present in the large intestine and colon.
If the middle of the tongue is coated white (ama), the toxins are present in the stomach and in the small intestine.
A pale tongue may indicate an anaemic condition, blood deficiency with symptoms of general weakness of the whole body.
A yellowish coating on the tongue may suggest excess bile is present in the gallbladder or a possible liver disorder.
A blue tongue is normally an indication of a heart condition.
A whitish tongue indicates Kapha (water) imbalance, with a mucus accumulation causing blocked dhatus (channels) .
A red or yellow-green tongue indicates a Pitta (fire) imbalance.
A Vata (air) imbalance is manifested by a twitching, quivering tongue body, that might also show signs of black to brown colouration.
A healthy tongue should look, symmetric and evenly pink. Neither too thick nor too thin, and oval in shape.
It should remain still.
It should have a thin, transparent coating, colouring the tongue pink.
By observing your tongue each morning you can tap into a plethora of knowledge about our internal world. You can learn to understand what foods, activities and thought patterns aid your internal organs and bring about good digestive health.
Enjoy watching and reading the feedback your body is giving you.
